Shopify and AI assistants: can ChatGPT order from your store?
In short
Often, in part. Shopify publishes agent doors on an eligible store's domain, such as a UCP checkout and an llms.txt. ChatGPT sends buyers to your checkout; Gemini and Copilot check out in the chat for US buyers, Meta for the US, Canada and Mexico. Questions, cancelling and returns need more.
What each assistant does with your store
Shopify calls it agentic storefronts: your products reach AI assistants through Shopify Catalog. It is on by default for an eligible store, needs your terms of service, privacy policy and refund policy filled in, and each channel can be switched off in your admin. Orders arrive in your Shopify admin like any other, and fulfilment, returns and customer service stay with you (Shopify Help Center: agentic storefronts). What each one does, as of October 2026:
- ChatGPT. Finds and compares your products through Shopify Catalog. The buyer pays in your own checkout, opened in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab. Your store must sell to customers in the US. OpenAI stepped back from checkout inside the chat in March 2026. (Shopify Help Center: ChatGPT; TechCrunch, 24 March 2026)
- Google AI Mode and Gemini. A Shopify-powered checkout inside the chat, paid by card, for a store based in the US that sells to US customers and has a Google Merchant Center account. (Shopify Help Center: Google AI Mode and Gemini)
- Microsoft Copilot. A checkout inside Copilot, on by default for an eligible store, shown to buyers in the US. (Shopify Help Center: Microsoft Copilot)
- Meta, Muse among its apps once it's available there. A checkout on Meta's apps for a store that sells to the US, Canada or Mexico. (Shopify Help Center: Meta)
What Shopify publishes on your domain
Shopify serves a UCP profile, its MCP server, a policies search and an llms.txt on your store's own address, with nothing for you to install.
The four addresses, and what each does
-
/.well-known/ucp: Your UCP profile: it names checkout, cart, order and catalogue, and the MCP server that serves them. -
/api/ucp/mcp: That server: tools to search your catalogue, build a cart, create and complete a checkout, and read an order an agent placed. An agent identifies itself to Shopify (a token or a signed request) and presents its own UCP profile, and a checkout that needs the buyer hands over to your checkout page. -
/api/mcp: A search of your store's policies and FAQs. Its catalogue and cart tools moved to the UCP server above. -
/llms.txt: One file Shopify keeps for you, also served at /llms-full.txt and /agents.md, telling agents about your store's UCP doors. A theme template, agents.md.liquid or llms.txt.liquid, replaces it.
(Shopify.dev: Checkout MCP; Shopify.dev: Order MCP; Shopify.dev: Storefront MCP; Shopify.dev: agents.md.liquid)
Agentic commerce readiness on Shopify: what our check counts
We read what your store publishes, and never place an order. Under the published rules (version 3, as amended on 18 October 2026), a Shopify store is scored as a shop. Your UCP profile counts once our read finds Product markup with prices on your pages, or another door of yours that takes orders, such as your store's own UCP or storefront server. Then ordering, paying, your catalogue and tracking count.
What counts, and from where
- Order: the UCP checkout, its
create_checkouttool. - Pay: the payment handlers your UCP profile names.
- Catalogue and stock: the UCP catalogue, such as
search_catalog. - Track: the UCP order capability.
- Who you are:
LocalBusinessmarkup with your name, address and opening hours; selling through UCP counts in place of the address.
These don't come with Shopify's doors, and they hold most of the points left:
- A way to ask you something, before buying or when something goes wrong. Since 12 October it counts for shops: about 14 of 100 points.
- Changing, cancelling, returning and a receipt for an order: about 8 points each. Shopify's order tool reads an order an agent placed; it doesn't change, cancel or return it.
- Cancelling a cart or a checkout (
cancel_cart,cancel_checkout): that isn't cancelling an order, so it earns nothing. - Pages made for people, such as your contact form, chat widget and order status page.
What you can add
- A way to ask you something. An A2A agent card, a
send_messageorcreate_support_tickettool on an MCP server on your domain, a support service your UCP profile declares with its MCP server on your domain, or an agent inbox. Ask your helpdesk app whether it offers one. - Order lookup, changes, cancelling, returns and receipts. Tools such as
get_order_status,update_order,cancel_order,request_returnandget_invoice, on an MCP server or in an OpenAPI document on your domain; a lookup by order number and email is a simple start. Ask your returns or order-tracking app whether it offers one. A request that a person at your shop approves counts the same as one carried out at once. - Your llms.txt, naming your doors. If you replace Shopify's file with your own template, keep its UCP lines, and add a line for each door you add.
- Surfing Dog Inbox (ours, open source), one option among apps for asking you something: free software (MIT) you run at your own subdomain, where agents write to you and you answer from its app, from your helpdesk through a bridge, or with your own AI. Or let us run it for you: free during the pilot, at an address on your own domain. Orders placed in your Shopify checkout stay in Shopify, so changing or returning them, or a receipt, needs a door there (how the inbox works).

Questions
Does Shopify support agentic commerce?
Yes. For eligible stores Shopify publishes a UCP checkout on the store's own domain and lists products with AI assistants through agentic storefronts, on by default. Checkout inside Gemini and Copilot is for US buyers, and on Meta for the US, Canada and Mexico; ChatGPT sends buyers to your own checkout.
Can I sell on ChatGPT with Shopify?
Yes, if your store sells to customers in the US and your products qualify for Shopify Catalog. ChatGPT shows and compares them, and the buyer pays in your own checkout, opened from ChatGPT. Your terms of service, privacy policy and refund policy need to be filled in.
Does Shopify make an llms.txt for my store?
Yes. Shopify serves one file it keeps for you at /llms.txt, /llms-full.txt and /agents.md, telling agents about your store's UCP doors. A theme template replaces it; if you write your own, keep those lines. llms.txt helps an agent read about you, and on its own it opens no door.
Why doesn't my Shopify store score 100?
A full score needs the whole journey. Shopify's doors let an agent order, pay and read an order, but not ask you a question, change or cancel an order, start a return or fetch a receipt. Cancelling a cart or a checkout isn't cancelling an order, so it doesn't count.
